Rigid adherence to rules routines and procedures was an important part of clinical care and treatment of those with mental health issues. I think you wholly missed that in the severe rigidity, Nurse Ratched was trying to protect those in her Ward, knowing full well that McMurphy was not genuinely mentally ill; and his actions involving the other patients on the ward weee for his entertainment. Those actions were disrupting the progress of patients' therapy. I don't condone mean-spirited care of patients, but there is something to be said for regimens and procedures and routines. Even now working with students who have mental health or brain development issues, we see those same requirements, and Outsiders rarely understand why there is such a need to keep to rigid structure in our process.
